Florence and the Machine's debut album "Lungs," which was released in July last year, topped the British album charts on Sunday after 28 consecutive weeks in the top 40, the Official Charts Company said.
Three other albums in the top 10 were debuts released in 2009, including American singer Lady Gaga's "The Fame" -- released a year ago -- at number four, and Pixie Lott's "Turn it up" -- released in September -- at number 10. "It shows how much of the new talent which emerged last year is here for the long term," said Martin Talbot, managing director of the Official Charts Company. Delphic, a trio from Manchester, England who have been tipped as one of the top new talents of 2010, were a new entry at number eight with their debut album "Acolyte." In the singles charts, Iyaz, a singer and rapper from the Virgin Islands, held on to the top spot for a second week running with his single "Replay." Glee, an American television series which has just begun in Britain, also made its mark on the top 10, with the Glee cast's cover of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" charting at number five, just ahead of the original version at number six. Plan B's "Stay too long" was another new entry, debuting at number nine. |
