The City of London Corporation, which acts as the localauthority for the Square Mile, has today agreed to donate £25,000to support the rescue effort in Haiti, following widespreaddevastation caused by the earthquake.

The money will be sent direct to the British Red Cross torelieve suffering in the country which, according to media reports,is struggling to come to terms with the scale of the disaster.

Nick Anstee, Lord Mayor of the City of London, said: "All of usin the City have been moved by the widespread destruction and lossof life in Haiti. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyoneaffected."The City of London Corporation has a history of swift supportfor Red Cross appeals, including early gifts to aid appeals,including Darfur, Zimbabwe and Southern Africa.
