Irish Society "delighted" with Derry/Londonderry"s UK Cityof Culture announcement

Last night Derry/Londonderry was chosen as the UK"s inauguralCity of Culture, fighting off competition from Birmingham, Norwichand Sheffield. It will adopt the title in 2013.
The idea for a UK City of Culture came from the success ofLiverpool during its year as European Capital of Culture in 2008.
The award doesn"t come with any government funding, although theorganisers hope to use it as a focus for fundraising andregeneration.
Sir David Lewis, Governor of The Honourable The Irish Societysaid:"The award will bring lasting benefits for the city. It is agreat honour and I am confident that it will make it grow in thefuture. The Irish Society is delighted to have been able to helpwin this award."
